Astronomy in Dominica

This is MESSIER 66, a wonderful galaxy that is located in Leo Constellation.

Messier 66 also known as NGC 3627 is about 36 million light years from us...

This galaxy is much bigger than our Milky Way.

At this period of the year in Dominica, we can see in the first part of the night, this beautiful constellation : LEO CONSTELLATION.

It is very easy to recognize because it has bright stars. Some of those stars have planets.

Leo constellation contains many bright galaxies, like MESSIER 66 and others great objects.

I wish to honour HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE thanks to whom we had magnificent pictures these last years and great discovers. Hubble Space Telescope is in the heart of every astronomers. It will be replaced in 2018 by the James Webb Telescope which will offer us great surprises too on our amazing universe !

This is the great ORION NEBULA is visible light. Also known as M42 orNGC 1976, Orion Nebula is located in Orion's belt, in the constellation of Orion and at a average distance of 1344 lights years from us. It is a region of massive star formation. This means that every year, hundreds of baby stars are born here !

This is a very beautiful picture in visible light of our galaxy, the MILKY WAY, taken from the Very Large Telescop in Chile. We are in the Milky Way, so we can only take a picture from the inside. The Milky Way contains our solar system and billions of other solar systems with billions of other planets. Its name “milky” is derived from its appearance as a dim glowing band arching across the night sky in which the naked eye cannot distinguish individual stars.

This is the wonderful "SOMBRERO GALAXY", my favorite one. This galaxy also known as M104 or NGC 4594 is an unbarred spiral one. We find it in the constellation Virgo and is located at 28 million light-years from us... You can see a prominent dust lane in the middle and a bright large central bulge. Like all the galaxies, this one has a central supermassive black hole.

This is a picture of SATURN, which is the 6th planet from the sun.

Saturn is a gas giant planet, like Uranus, Jupiter ans Neptune. It means that if we would go on these gas giant planets, we could not put a foot on it, it is only gas, there is no ground like on our confortable Earth ! 

It would be impossible to make a little walk like that was made on the Moon by Niel Amstrong !
